That spring he holed up in the Smokies, in a tired resort hotel by the asylum so he could be close to her. A bout of pneumonia over Christmas had provoked a flare-up of his TB, and he was still recovering. The mountain air was supposed to help. Days he wrote in his bathrobe drinking Coca-Cola to keep himself going, holding off on the gin till nightfall—a small point of pride—sipping on the dark verandah as couples strolled among the fireflies rising from the golf course.—West of Sunset by Stewart O'Nan (Penguin USA / Viking, 2015, p. 1)

I've seen this one around and love the cover. I didn't know the subject was F. Scott Fitzgerald though. Now I have to be sure to pick this one up!
ReplyDeleteToday I'm featuring A Sister To Honor.
I've been seeing good things about this novel. I've only read a couple of O'Nan's other books, so I'm curious how this will play out. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteInteresting that there is so much fascination with him.
ReplyDeleteSounds really interesting! I hope you'll enjoy it, Beth, after the first paragraph, too ;)

I didn't like this as much as O'Nan's previous novels, but it is improving as I mull it over.
ReplyDeleteThis one is on my wish list because I've always been fascinated by the Fitzgeralds.

ReplyDeleteYes, I love the intro, and will try to get to this one soon. I hear it's very different from his previous books.

This sounds really good.
ReplyDeleteI was so hopeful about this one....given my fascination with the Fitzgeralds, but was disappointed. The writing was good, but the story was just kind of drab. I'd be open to trying a different O'Nan book, as I've heard good things and it wasn't the writing that irked me.
ReplyDeleteAdding to my TBR!
ReplyDeleteThis one looks good. I am intrigued by F. Scott and Zelda, so I'd keep reading!
ReplyDeleteThe opening paragraph certainly holds promise. The whole idea of Fitzgerald after his fame has wained. I'm interested is knowing more.
ReplyDeleteI've read mixed reviews, but I'm still intrigued. I'm more in love with Zelda then F Scott but I'd love to read this.
ReplyDeleteintriguing .. thanks!
ReplyDeleteLike so many, I've long been fascinated by Fitzgerald -- would love to read this one!
