Best Young Adult and Middle Grade Books from 2013
It's time for my best-of 2013 lists! I will post four this year. Thursday was all about audiobooks, Friday was adult books, Saturday was food and cookbooks, and today is middle grade and young adult. Enjoy!
A note on my selections: The books that appear on this list were read by me in 2013 but may have been published earlier. I picked the books that resonated with me, without regard for the target audience. Books are presented alphabetically by title; links lead to my reviews or thoughts.
- Mary E. Pearson's The Adoration of Jenna Fox (Macmillan / Henry Holt), dystopian, young adult
- Rob Buyea's Because of Mr. Terupt (Random House / Delecorte), contemporary fiction, middle grade
- Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season (Bloomsbury USA), fantasy, dystopian, young adult
- Jennifer A. Nielsen's The False Prince (Scholastic), medieval, historical fiction, middle grade
- Catherynne M. Valente's The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Macmilian Childrens / Feiwel & Friends), fantasy, middle grade
- Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane (William Morrow), fantasy, for everyone, top children's book

I had two DNFs of your list! And didn't read the others! But usually we have more similar tastes! :--)
I didn't realize that The Adoration of Jemma Hardy was a YA book. I've been captivated by the title since I first saw it earlier this year. That won't stop me from reading it. I find I like most YA books that I have picked up. Thanks for the list. Hope you have a great new year.
I've really enjoyed every book in the Fox series, but none as much as The Adoration... I also listed Ocean at the End of the Lane in my favorites, but on audio.
Thanks! Your lists are always helpful!
I loved The Adoration of Jenna Fox when I read it.
I had my introduction to Neil Gaiman this year with The Graveyard Book. It was on my list of favorite audios! So, I'm definitely game to check out more from him now. :-)
Man, I almost got The False Prince from Audible the other day and then got something else instead. I will have to make sure to get it soon!
oooh I acquired Because of Mr. Terupt back when it was a Cybils nom and still haven't read it. but I keep *thinking* about it so perhaps I should fix that!
I haven't read any of these but I do intend to get the audio of The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Can't go wrong with a Neil Gaiman book.
I haven't read any of these but really want to read Because of Mr. Terupt and The Ocean and the End of the Lane.
Ocean at the End of the Lane made it to my favorite audio list. Happy New Year.
I haven't read any of these either, but I really enjoyed The Adoration of Jenna Fox. I just didn't follow through on the rest of the series.
Nice list. I've read three of the six and loved them. I know the loss of your mother-in-law has brought sorrow to you and your family, but I want to wish you and yours all the best in 2014 and beyond.
I LOVED The False Prince. Did you read the sequel? My daughter and I are waiting for the last book in the trilogy to come out.
I really enjoyed Gaiman's book but not enough to add it to my favorites list. I really need to get to Valente's book soon. Nice list.
want to check out The Bone Season. wasn't that thrilled with Neil Gaiman's book but I'm not all that into fantasy. loved Coraline film and have read a few other of his books and only liked one.
How embarrassing that I've read none of these!
