Giveaway Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham
The Book: At the beginning of 1995, Franny Banks has lived in New York for two and a half years and is working on her acting career. Well, okay, so she really lives in a cold apartment in Brooklyn with two roommates and is a waitress in a comedy club. But honestly, she's sure she will be a success by summer. She simply needs to buckle down, get into a routine, and practice for a scheduled acting showcase. Never mind the little problems of the overdue rent and an absent agent.
You likely know Lauren Graham as the actor who starred in the popular TV series Gilmore Girls and in the movies (Evan Almighty). Thus no one could blame you for wondering about her skills as an author. Although I've only just started reading her debut novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe, I can reassure you that Graham has a talent for writing. After just a chapter or so, I'm already rooting for Franny, and I'm curious about her roommates and even her dad.
I just love that the book includes pages from Franny's personal date book, which contains shopping lists, reminders, and even sketches. It's so easy to get a sense of Franny from her calendar. Graham also wrote parts of the novel in the form of answering machine messages and scripts. Nice touches.
Here's what I think so far about Someday, Someday, Maybe: Lauren Graham has a storyteller's skill. Her characters act and think like real people, and the dialogue is smart and funny. Franny's life isn't all boys and auditions and the fast track to fame (but there is at least one cute guy in her acting class); instead, it's a down-to-earth mix of struggle and progress as she tries to find her way into adulthood. Fanny has good friends, an unglamorous job, and lots of optimism.
If you're anything like me, once you start reading, you'll be in the Fanny fan club. I can't wait to find out what happens. Look for my review later in the month.

Oh, I really enjoyed this story! I knew I'd be intrigued as soon as I saw Lauren Graham's name (huge "Gilmore Girls" fan -- like so many of us!), and I was so pleased and impressed with her storytelling abilities... just like you mentioned. These characters felt real. Good luck to all the entrants -- it's a winner! :)
