Booking through Thursday: Get Shelved

Here's this week's Booking through Thursday, hosted by Deb. To play along or to see other answers, visit the meme's blog.

How do you arrange your books on your shelves? Is it by author, by genre, or you just put it where it falls on?

My books are not in any particular order. Some bookshelves and cases were supposed to be dedicated to a particular genre, but that idea went by the wayside many years ago. Our shelves are stuffed to overflowing, and we have books on almost every horizontal surface, including the floor.

On the other hand, I pretty much know where to look to find a book. I'm rarely stumped—except when I really, really need a particular book for work or for a recipe and I'm well behind schedule. Then the book gods like to play their little game, and I can't find what I'm looking for.

LoL...well, I went with how my books are *supposed* to be organized...I'm with ya on the "almost every horizontal surface" thing, tho. Really. "I feel your pain" LoL...

Hope you have a great Thursday, and a wonderful weekend ahead!

Happy Reading...

I can never seem to find anything I'm looking for. LOL I tried keeping all my cozy mysteries together, then my Harlequins/ Silhouettes, etc. but it just got out of hand.

As long as you can find what you want...

Maybe organization is overrated. As you say, as long as you can find it... you're all set.

Aww Beth don't feel bad. I think most of us have books stacked in odd places around our house. There are even a couple of cupboards in my kitchen that have a few books hid away.

Oh, I consider books on the floor a decorating strategy! And on the sofa and all the chairs, instead of extra cushions.

Amat Libris 2/19/09, 8:29 AM

I do the books on the floor thing too. I've tried tidying them away but the room never looks right afterward. A little literary chaos is needed to make a place look cozy.

I have no system either besides the height thing, yet I always manage to find what I am looking for too. How does that work? Photographic memory for books? Sense memory? Magic?

I'm sad to say I have stacks on the floor too.

Debbie 2/19/09, 9:19 AM

Don't be sad.... it's a whole decorating theme. Stack them higher and put a small lamp on them.
Personally, I love the overflowing bookshelf look.

Melody 2/19/09, 9:54 AM

I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone, LOL.

My shelves are overflowing as well and some do end up stacked on the floor. When I can't find a book, my son says "God made it invisible"

I know what you mean when you speak of the book gods. They love to play their games. Your house sounds like mine before we retired and moved out. I thought all those books everywhere made for a very cozy and charming home. But new visitors would always say, "Wow, you sure have a lot of books!"

My shelves are overflowing too. I somehow manage to find what I want, though, for which I'm grateful.

I'm with you. I know pretty much where every book is...even though my shelves are an insane wreck! Every where you look, there are books...lol! It's the book challenges. That's the excuse I'll be using this year. ;)

Unknown 2/19/09, 2:13 PM

That's kinda how mine are now..I know how they are organized, but they aren't very organized (although most are in boxes) I answered this with how I plan to organize wants I have my shelving in the library.

Nely 2/19/09, 3:27 PM

I love it that you have books everywhere. I've tried to have books everywhere but my hubby won't let me not to mention my little one's will destroy them... sighs.. I can only dream.

Nise' 2/19/09, 3:55 PM

It is too bad that this question did not motivate me to get my books back on the shelf and then take a pretty picture! LOL.

claire 2/19/09, 5:32 PM

My books are really organized, but even if they weren't, I'd know where exactly I put them last, too. I think we book nuts are just strange like that. :)

Ana S. 2/19/09, 6:06 PM

I'm pretty much the same...my intention was to organize them by genre, but reality is a whole other thing :P I'm currently preparing to move, and I'm still thinking how to organize my books at the new place.

Penny 2/19/09, 8:48 PM

I more or less have different bookshelves for different books, such as cookbooks in the kitchen and kids books in the living rooms, so if I'm in need of a book I can at least narrow it down to the right room. :)

I've been enjoying reading these posts. Seems like everyone has their own little system that works for them. Me? I arrange them so they look nice on the shelf!

Book Lover Lisa 2/19/09, 9:58 PM

I pretty much always know where my books are, even when they are not super organized. Of course they do tend to disappear when I need them. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintnence is nowhere to be found, just when I was going to lend it to someone.

Mary (Bookfan) 2/19/09, 10:20 PM

Mine are shelved by author and/or genre.

The Tome Traveller 2/21/09, 9:03 PM

Oh, I am so glad that I'm not alone in my piles and piles of books. We have PATHS through the books. Yes, we are addicts!

Anonymous,  2/22/09, 12:39 AM

I know what you mean about not having much organization but still being able to find your books. Thanks for your comment on my BTT post.

Anonymous,  2/22/09, 1:57 PM

I shelf my books by author's last name in alphabetical order. For fiction and literature, I single out the ones to be re-read and put them on a different case.

I have a few books laying around on my desk. If I'll pile any book in no order, that would be on my desk!

Anonymous,  2/23/09, 4:53 PM

My bookcases are neatly organized (fiction by author, nonfiction by subject), but those overflow PILES ... yikes! They're not even stacked neatly, just a big hodge-podge. Somehow, I can find what I'm looking for, though :)
